Printful has a beautiful, intuitive, easy to use user interface that makes it easy to upload your designs and create high quality, custom products for sale under your own brand.
This article show you, step-by-step, how to create & upload print on demand products from Printful to your eCommerce stores.
Prior to being able to upload products to your store you'll need to complete these two steps (which I'll cover in more depth in separate articles):
- Create your Printful seller account
- Connect your Printful account with your Amazon, eBay, or Etsy account by clicking "Stores" in the navigation, & then click "Choose a platform"
Assuming you've got the sync setup, you can proceed with creating your products!
I primarily upload t-shirts and embroidered hats, so I'll be covering how to upload both in this article.
Printful Custom Shirts
Selling t-shirts online is a no-brainer, as pretty much every person that lives in a civilized society wears one (outside of J.R. Smith after the Cavaliers 2016 NBA championship).
There's a strong correlation between demand & sales: higher demand = more sales. That said, we want to sell shirts on large eCommerce platforms where customers go to buy things! Simple logic, right?
I usually sell the Gildan 64000 Unisex Softstyle T-Shirt with Tear Away Label. Personally, I'm a big fan of this shirt. Every test order I've done has come in looking great, and the shirt is SO comfy.
Not to mention, it's the cheapest shirt available on Printful at the moment, so I would highly recommend using it. The only downside is the limited number of colors available.
- After your Printful account syncs up with your marketplace account, from the "Stores" screen, click "Add" underneath "Product Sync"
- Click "T-Shirts" under "Men's clothing"
- Select the t-shirt colors that contrast well & upload your design
- Select your mockup. I typically use the flat, standard shirt rendering
- Add a product title & set the price. If uploading to Etsy, make sure to use all 13 tags, which will help people find your listing
- Set a price - I typically aim to make at least $7.99 per sale. Don't forget to factor in any advertising costs + each marketplace's referral fees (Amazon: ~17%; Ebay: ~10%; Etsy: ~5%). If uploading to Etsy, it's recommended that you select a section to upload to.
- Click the "Submit to store" button
Printful Custom Embroidered Hats
Don't sleep on hats!
There's definitely lower competition on hats than on t-shirts. I believe NON-t-shirt items are "ahead of the curve" right now, and in a year or so people will look back and wish they had spent more time uploading them.
- After your Printful account syncs up with your marketplace account, from the "Stores" screen, click "Add" underneath "Product Sync"
- The create product screen should load. Click "Accessories" & then click "Embroidered Hats"
- Select the hat style + colors, then upload your design file and fit it to the hat - don't forget to choose a thread color
* Pro tip: remove any margins/padding from your hat designs before uploading them. This will allow Printful to configure it for optimal placement for you. - Add a product title & set the price. If uploading to Etsy, make sure to use all 13 tags, which will help people find your listing
- Set a price - I typically aim to make at least $9.99 per sale. Remember that embroidery digitization costs $8, and factor in any advertising costs + each marketplace's referral fees (Amazon: ~17%; Ebay: ~10%; Etsy: ~5%)
- If uploading to Etsy, I recommend categorizing your products, which looks more professional when customers browse your shop
- Click the "Submit to store" button
Uploading Products to Etsy
Uploading Printful products to Etsy will involve taking a few minor extra steps.
- During the upload process, you will want to select a category to submit your product to within Etsy. At a minimum, it makes your store look more professional
- After submitting to your store, wait ~30 seconds to 1 minute after submitting to your store - you should eventually see an "edit in Etsy" link appear
Click the link to open the product page in Etsy. Set the listing to automatically renew ($0.20 every 4 months) & set Printful as the production partner, then click "Publish"
